Generally, we don’t think of the mid-twentieth century as anything special. Eras farther back have been explored, but recent history is not as readily familiar to us because it hasn’t yet become embellished. I am in a position to explore that period and to define the way I choose to interpret it. These are romance paintings, but not romantic paintings.”
