Marine artist Paul Garnett is a native of Boston, Massachusetts. For
seven years in the late 70's and early 80's, he was a shipwright on the
1962 replica of the square-rigged vessel BOUNTY built for MGM's lavish
remake of Mutiny on the Bounty. His experience with the ship gave
him first hand and upfront knowledge of what it really was to sail and
handle square riggers, something that he strives to incorporate into all
of his canvases. His work is in private collections in the U.S. and
Britain, and has been featured on A&E Networks show on "Sea Tales" as well
as on the History Channel's "Histories Mysteries: The True Story of the
Mutiny on the Bounty."
His paintings have also appeared in Nautical World Magazine as well as
covers for three novels on the War of 1812 by historian William H. White: A
Press of Canvas, A Fine Topsail Breeze and The Evening Gun.
Between his many commissions Mr. Garnett is working on twelve canvases
that will tell the history of H.M.S. BOUNTY.
Of his paintings Paul says, "Although I've painted many commissions of
period ships and harbors I prefer to record sailing arid port events more
from our own time. This idea actually started with a statement in John
Stobart's book that said when he arrived from England, he discovered that
the long ago ports of America were not well represented on canvas by the
artists of those days. Thus, Mr. Stobart has made a lengendary career of
painting ports of America, etc. This is what gave me the idea of trying
to pay a little more attention to what is happening right in front of our
noses, something we all seem to take for granted."
