Fishing Fleet off Fort Constitution (formerly Fort William and Mary), at the mouth of the Piscataqua River, Portsmouth, New Hampshire, c. 1876
Known by many names - Fort Constitution Light, Portsmouth Harbor Light, Fort Point Light, and New Castle Light this distinctive structure was the first lighthouse built north of Boston in 1878. The first light tower on this spot was lit in 1771 and consisted of 304 lamps and a wooden shack.. Over the years new buildings were constructed. It marks the entrance to the Piscataqua River which forms the boundary between New Hampshire and Maine.
