Boeing B 314 ATLANTIC CLIPPER at moorings in the Tagus River opposite the Lisbon waterfront, 1940
watercolor, 14” x 21”
$5,500
As shown in Ian's 2002 book titled "Flying Boats: The J-class Yachts of Aviation."
"Lisbon was the European end of the more southerly North Atlantic route-- from there the Clippers flew west via the Azores, Bermuda, and on to Baltimore or New York. As Hitler's armies swamped continental Europe, and Italy joined the Axis powers, Portugal became the only friendly air route between Britain and Africa, thence to the Middle East and the Orient. The historic and dignified city of Lisbon became a vital connection between the countries of the free world. During the war, Lisbon had plenty of flying boats on the Tagus River."
