The painting depicts the Bark James L. Davis which was built in 1857 by Jeremiah Darling in Port Jefferson for Jonas Smith and Company. She had a long and distinguished career setting the speed record between New York and Mobile, Alabama; rescuing the crew of the Setauket-built Schooner Mary Stedman; and serving in the U.S. Navy during the Civil War from 1861-1865. She eventually ended up in Palermo, Italy, where she was lost track of in 1890.The painting is by one of America’s earliest known marine painters, Joseph B. Smith (1798-1876) and appears to be one of the only paintings made of the James L. Davis during her career.
