The River Thames at Greenwich Showing the American Frigate ST. LAWRENCE for London's Great Exhibition of 1851

England's Great Exhibition of 1851 featured exhibits from 25 countries as a way to showcase the latest advancements in science and the arts. It was the precursor to what became the International World's Fair today. The Frigate ST. LAWRENCE was tasked with delivering the United States programs to the Exhibition. She's shown here just off the distinctive Queen's House in Greenwich on the Thames - on the distant hill can be seen The Royal Observatory. Today, while the vessels may be different, the view from ashore is remarkably similar. In this masterpiece of a painting, Dodd has captured the astonishing architectural detail of architect Inigo Jones' great design.
