And the Band Played on…

The Sinking of the RMS Titanic, April 15, 1912

oil on canvas,  34” x 48”

SOLD

The story of the sinking of the RMS Titanic on April 15, 1912 is perhaps the most well-known event in Maritime History. Many books, movies, research studies, ship models and paintings, have been made about the ship and the tragic event and the people involved. Actual artifacts from the ship have been retrieved and exhibited around the world. In the 1980’s a single telegram from the Titanic stating simply “We have struck an Iceberg” sold at auction for $100,000. Today, for a fee, Titanic fanatics can actually travel in a miniature submarine to view the ship on the Atlantic Ocean floor first-hand.

When Artist Marek Sarba was thinking about making a painting related to the Titanic, he wanted to do something no one else has ever done before, and employ his tremendous skills as a portrait painter to create actual, individual portraits of some of the real people aboard the ship. This painting pays tribute to 57 passengers and crew who lost their lives in the sinking. Sarba has literally painted an actual portrait of each person, and shares their story alongside the painting. It took him a year to research and create this poignant painting.
