watercolor, 15" x 20"

$4,500

On May 29, 1781, during the American Revolution, the Continental frigate ALLIANCE, under command of Capt. John Barry, battles HMS ATALANTA and HMS TREPASSEY off Nova Scotia. During the battle, Capt. Barry is wounded and is forced to undergo treatment. ALLIANCE’s colors are also shot away. The British, believing she surrendered, cease fire. A small breeze then allows ALLIANCE to bring most her guns to bear. After several broadsides, the British ships surrender.
