The frothy, lively sea in this painting is so distinctive, that it could only be the work of one artist -- Englishman Montague Dawson, whose paintings loomed large over the world of Marine Art for over 60 years! The sight of this magnificent clipper under full sail in the open ocean is one of the most iconic images in Marine Art- nobody captured the majesty of this scene like Montague Dawson. Today his paintings are still eagerly sought after by collectors who desire to own a work by one of the most recognized Marine Artists of our time. The record for his paintings at auction is $508,000.
Painting in his studio in Falmouth, England, Dawson was awarded a rare honor just before his death in 1973, when two fully rigged training ships sailed into the harbor outside his studio and dipped their ensigns in, a Royal Navy salute to him and his astonishing career.
About the Ship: MAITLAND was a Clipper launched in 1865 at the shipyard of William Pile, Sunderland, England for John R. Kelso. After a long and successful career in the lucrative tea trade she was wrecked in 1875, on a coral reef in the Huon Islands, New Caledonia, on voyage from Brisbane to Foochow.
