New York Bound — the Red Star Line

oil on canvas  — 18" x 24"

$9,000

The Red Star Line was a line of packet ships that sailed between New York and Liverpool. In the early 1800s packet ships offered a new system of shipping across the Atlantic — they departed on a set schedule. Before this, ships would wait to set sail until they were able to obtain a full load of goods and passengers. Red Star ships departed from South Street in New York on the 25th of each month, and departed from Liverpool on the 12th of each month. The Red Star Line went out of business in 1867, and another company started a Red Star Line that lasted until the 1930s.
