North to Quoddy Head Light, Lubec, Maine

(Franklin Roosevelt’s ‘Campobello’ Summer Residence is in the distance)

The lighthouse was first built in 1808, by order of President Thomas Jefferson, the original wooden tower was replaced by the current tower which became operational in 1858. The red and white tower is the only "candy striped" tower in the United States.

The name Quoddy Head, which means "fertile and beautiful place", comes from the Native American Passamaquoddy tribe. The impressive black cliffs date back to the Silurian Age when volcanic magma rose up from the ocean forming the rock cliffs.
