Steven Dews

Steven Dews is one of the world's most popular maritime artists. His great skill lies in his ability to reproduce the natural elements of sea and sky on canvas and combine that with absolute precision when depicting ships and yachts under sail.

Steven's family has been involved with the sea over many generations from sailing river barges and deep sea sailing ships to modern bulk carriers and oil tankers. He draws much of his inspiration from sailing and has owned many yachts over the past 40 years. He relates, "I sail so I can paint and I paint so I can sail, I have a great respect for the sea, I never tire of her and all her moods". He is, at present, planning a world trip on his latest vessel in order to get more deep sea experience.

Steven's work is predominantly privately commissioned but he has also undertaken many major projects over the years, including - official artist for the British America's Cup challenge team in Perth, commissioned by the Government of Australia to record, on canvas, the re-enactment of the first Fleet's arrival in Botany Bay and the bicentennial celebrations in Sydney Harbour. In 1995 he was asked to create a painting to record the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the formation of the New York Yacht Club. Then, in 2001 he was commissioned by the Royal Yacht Squadron at Cowes to paint a center piece painting for their new Pavilion, depicting the start of the America's Cup Jubilee Round the Island Race. He is at present completing a series of paintings for Alinghi depicting their America's Cup successes, both in New Zealand and Valencia. His paintings now hang in many important collections throughout the world.
