It is October, 1682, and William Penn has arrived on his ship ‘WELCOME,’ anchored on the Delaware River, to inspect the development site of his planned city “Philadelphia.” Here, the Dutch, English, and Swedish settlers had lived and farmed among the Native Americans since about 1609. Earlier in 1682, the riverfront depicted was bought from three Swedish brothers named Svensson.
